Despite all the experiences of the past, improvement is quite evident, for example, since November 2006 Honduras has signed a free trade agreement with the United States which will have a stabilizing effect in times to come.
Traveling in Honduras is easy, cheap and extremely pleasurable. Tourism has not become overwhelming or over run by commercialism. The islands along the bay are surrounded by idyllic abundant reef which appeal to every type of underwater explorer. The most visited of the islands is called Roatan. Things to see include the Carambola Botanical Gardens that wind their way through the lush guarded forest and the coral surrounding that contains species such as the whale shark. The capital city of Tegucigalpa is located in the country’s interior where the climate is calm and moderate. The capital is colorful and traditional as seen through the architectural and indigenous influences. Galleries, restaurants, markets, a large tranquil park and a 17th century legendary cathedral are highlights of a visit there.
Hondurans have a lasting effect on visitors and it can be said that the warmth of their smiles are what impresses most. Traditions of dance, dress, food and celebration occur with regularity amongst a truly hospitable environment. There are many spirited African tribal influences along with many ritualistic practices that astound, fascinate and amaze visitors.
